FOREWORD Why DEI is critical if healthcare is to be inclusive

To be truly effective , healthcare systems need to mirror the societies they serve , not only in terms of gender but also ethnicity

“ Leaders must take meaningful action to address gender and ethnicity inequities in health provision ”

Many healthcare companies have diversity , equity , and inclusion ( DEI ) positions , or even departments , but these alone are no guarantee of impactful change .

Given certain diseases have a higher prevalence in minority populations – and also that many diseases affect only women – it is vitally important that healthcare providers take meaningful action to address gender and ethnicity inequities in health provision .
In this issue , we hear from two healthcare figures at the forefront of promoting DEI in the sector .
Enrique Caballero is Director of Diabetes Education in the Postgraduate Medical Education Department at Harvard Medical School . Dr Caballero is a long-time advocate for improved care for minority populations , and stresses the importance of transcultural diabetes care .
Anita Alexander , meanwhile , is VP of Engineering at Providence , a not-for-profit Catholic healthcare system that runs multiple hospitals and clinics throughout the US and overseas . She is based in India , and she tells how 47 % of the company ’ s leadership roles are held by women .
In this issue we explore this and many other challenges facing the industry .
