IN the United States , breast cancer is the most common non-skin cancer and the second leading cause of cancerrelated death in women , according to the National Cancer Institute . From a global perspective , the World Cancer Research Fund International has found that breast cancer is the most common cancer in women worldwide , with nearly 1.7 million new cases diagnosed in 2012 alone .
Research into the causes , prevention and treatment of breast cancer continues to be done in medical centers around the world , and studies continue to uncover lifestyle factors and habits that alter breast cancer risk . As an active area of research , there is more hope for better diagnosing breast cancer thanks to new technologies .
“ The fact that you cannot argue with is that breast cancer mortality has declined by 24 percent in the past 10 years — and a lot of that is due to early detection ,” Carol Lee , MD , chairwoman of the Commission on Breast Imaging for the American College of Radiology and professor of diagnostic radiology at Yale University School of Medicine , states on WebMD .
