How will the nanorobot microsurgeons work? Tony Young’ s vision of nanorobots entering our bloodstream to treat disease is exciting. But how would it work?
The National Clinical Director for Innovation at NHS England says the nanorobots would be made from proteins and strands of RNA or DNA and programmed to complete tasks.
For example: Chemotherapy treatment could be contained with a nanorobot to be released onto a tumour. Tony explains:“ At the moment chemotherapy acts systematically across the body. You lose your hair.”
Nanorobots would detect the additional acidity of a tumour and release the chemotherapy drugs at the site of the tumour. Tony says:“ Instead of releasing the chemotherapy in your scalp, so your hair drops out, you release it at the tumour site so you can probably give people a much higher dose.”
